Yes, Mike Binder was once a rocket scientist. He grew up in the Apollo era of space exploration and still believes it is essential to mankind's future. His work for NASA helped build his experience and commitment to systems thinking and integrated design - rocket engine's are finely tuned to achieve maximum overall performance, each component being dependent on the performance of others in the system. In addition to studying the behavior of rocket engines through simulations, Mike applied that work to the development of advanced condition monitoring and control systems.

What has this got to do with architecture and sustainable design? Nature is the ultimate in complex non-linear systems, and buildings rely on mechanical and electrical systems to provide comfort and efficiency. What better place to apply our experience in system performance modeling? Architecture goes beyond thermodynamic performance to encompass considerations of aesthetics, occupant comfort, environmental and social justice as well.
